BUENOS AIRES MAYOR CLOSES CITY ZOO. According to “One
Green Planet,” Mayor Horacio Rodríguez Larreta announced recently that
the city’s 140 year old zoo is closing. Not only that, but the city plans
to send most of the 1,500 animals to sanctuaries, and there is an 864 acre
reserve where many of the birds will be released to freedom. Plans are in the
works to transform the animal prison into an ecological park where wildlife can
roam free. How I would love to see those awful cages empty, never to imprison
anyone again. The mayor explained the city’s action by saying,
“This situation of captivity is degrading for the animals…”
We all know that zoos are no place for any animal. Zoochosis can lead to
depression, stereotypic rocking and pacing, even suicide attempts. Zoos do not
teach children to respect animals but rather make dominating and exploiting
them acceptable and normal. We had heard that Costa Rica had closed its zoos,
but apparently the closing was contested and the animals are still
incarcerated. Some other zoos around the world have closed including the
notorious Prairie Dog Town in Western Kansas, but we still have a long way to
go.
PRAYERS THIS WEEK FOR AN END TO ALL ZOOS ON EARTH: We give
thanks for Mayor Larreta’s compassion in action. He has used his power
and influence to do the right thing. May his actions resound throughout the
worldwide zoo community and cause zoo patrons to stop visiting zoos altogether.
May the hearts of all zoo directors and employees and zoo visitors open to the
truth. We know that many of them went into the zoo business or visited a zoo
innocently enough with a fascination for animals. May that fascination
transform itself within all of them into a true and powerful respect and
compassion for every animal. Let us imagine these people finally and fearlessly
looking into the eyes of each individual animal, from the lions and elephants
to the spiders and snakes. And there in the suffering eyes of these innocents,
may they see the Divine looking back at them. Dear animals imprisoned in zoos,
we speak out and pray for your freedom. May all human hearts and souls be
awakened to your beauty, your sacredness, and your right to live free. And may
you and your children live free—now and forever.
As always, with tears of gratitude, I send my thanks to each of you,
dear Prayer Circle members, for joining this circle of compassion and
shining the Light of Truth for all to see, so that one day soon, all
beings will live in peace together.
May compassion and love reign over all the earth for all beings
everywhere.
Thank you all for your devotion to truth, love, liberation and peace
for all beings.
With Love, peace, and gratitude from Judy Carman, and greetings from
