THE WORLD IS BEGINNING TO SEE—ANIMALS HAVE EMPATHY:
An August 18 In Defense of Animals article by Laura Bridgeman, entitled
“Humpback Whales to the Rescue,” reports on a study and a specific
event showing humpback whales rescuing animals of other species. “Back in
2009, marine ecologist Robert Pitman, who conducted the study, witnessed one of
these intriguing encounters. A humpback whale intruded into a group of orca
whales hunting a Weddell seal. The Mother Nature Network describes the
encounter, “In order to better protect the seal, the whale placed [him]
safely on [her] upturned belly to keep [him] out of the water. As the seal
slipped down the whale’s side, the humpback appeared to use [her]
flippers to carefully help the seal back aboard. Finally, when the coast was
clear, the seal was able to safely swim off to another, more secure ice
floe.” Seeing this amazing act of altruism, Pitman began a search for
other eye witness accounts. He found descriptions of 115 such events between
1951 and 2012. Imagine how many more there were that were not witnessed by
people. In fact, it’s rare to see humpbacks at such close range at
all.
There are thousands of other stories of hippos, cheetahs, dolphins and many
animals displaying tender empathy and altruism to help animals from other
species, including human beings. Most people who have dogs have experienced
profound and sometimes overwhelming empathy and love from their dog companions.
Are animals trying to heal us? Do they somehow know how much we suffer from the
loss of our connection with them? Do they possess wisdom and purity of heart
that humanity lost long ago?
PRAYERS FOR HUMANITY—THAT THE HUMAN SPECIES WILL REGAIN ITS
DEEP AND HEALING CONNECTION WITH ANIMALS. We give thanks for the songs
of birds, the music of waterfalls, the loving nuzzling of dogs and cats. We
give thanks for the rare sightings of animals helping each other and even
helping us, despite what our species has done to theirs. We call upon the
Divine Loving Universe to help us understand this great mystery and to give us
all the strength and vision to bring humanity into its right relation with all
other beings. Dear animals of earth—you are showing us in so many ways
that you have wisdom and compassion far beyond what people believe. You show us
that all beings want and deserve life and freedom. We are telling the world
your stories; we are listening to you; we are here, in ever growing numbers, to
end speciesism and oppression forever. We call upon Divine Intelligence to
guide us as we pray and take action to bring the true nature of humanity into
being. Cruelty and violence cannot survive in a world overflowing with Love.
That is what we are creating day by day, prayer by prayer, action by action,
book by book. The tipping point is near. The Love you bring to this work in
your actions, thoughts, prayers, and visions is making it happen.

shining the Light of Truth for all to see, so that one day soon, all
beings will live in peace together.
May compassion and love reign over all the earth for all beings
everywhere.
