Wonderful, almost unbelievable news—According to a CNN article, Costa Rica plans to close its two zoos. One zoo will be transformed into a botanical garden and the other into a park. The zoo animals will either be returned to their homes in the wild or taken to sanctuaries. This is the country that banned circuses with animal acts several years ago and has also banned “sport” hunting.

There are some legal hoops for them to jump through and a lot of controversy, but they have set their intention, and it is a powerful one. This week let us send love and gratitude to everyone involved in this historic and compassionate decision. Let us send celebratory joy to the animals who will soon know freedom. And let us use this giant step for animals to help us grow our faith that this can happen all over the world. Not only do we now see that this is possible, but we can also build on this energy field that is rippling out of Costa Rica and see it opening minds and hearts in countries everywhere.

Zoos are antiquated symbols of humanity’s misguided belief that we have the right to do what we want with animals no matter how much suffering it causes. They are relics of a shameful era of human domination, and with our actions and prayers, they are finally beginning to disappear. In our prayers this week we will be smiling at the thought of No More Zoos.
