makes your heart sing and
go do that; for what the world needs is people with
hearts that sing."

Additional Prayers for Animals

We have added these prayers to our website for those of you who may feel drawn to pray more often or, perhaps, more specifically for certain animals or situations. One of the members of our Circle of Compassion suggested that we offer a weekly schedule of prayers for different groups of animals. We thought this was a powerful idea and would help us all focus our thought beams of love and compassion on these groups on the same days. Following this weekly schedule, on this same page, you’ll find additional prayers you can use for various situations. Here is the list of prayers included on this page.

A Prayer a Day for the Animals

Thank you, Monique, one of our wonderful members of the Prayer Circle, for suggesting this prayer for each day.

Monday: Prayers for all farmed animals
Tuesday: Prayers for companion animals who are homeless, being abused, or living in breeding mills
Wednesday: Prayers for animals in laboratories and classrooms
Thursday: Prayers for all aquatic animals
Friday: Prayers for wild animals being trapped, hunted, caged and/or killed for fur, flesh, leather, trophies, the pet trade, etc., and for wild animals being forced into stress and extinction due to loss of habitat.
Saturday: Prayers for animals used in entertainment, such as,, zoos, circuses, rodeos, aquariums, theme parks, canned hunts, etc.
Sunday: Prayers for the nations of insects and other small creatures

A little note from Judy about these prayers: It was a deeply emotional experience to write these prayers. I didn’t make it through without crying. It’s so hard to face the details of their suffering. Please don’t feel you have to use these prayers if you find them too painful. You certainly are welcome to make up your own or just read the titles. It is the intention that sends out the power of love from your heart. However, if you can read them or parts of them, remember, your emotion, your passion does increase the power of your prayers, because you are so focused on the subject. Please find comfort in knowing that your love alone, all by itself, without words, is more powerful than anything else in the universe.

Monday: Today, let us send our prayers to all farmed animals.
May compassion and love reign over all the earth for all farmed animals—Dear ducks, geese, turkeys, chickens; cows, pigs, lambs, bison, elk, deer, and all of you who are suffering today in tiny cages or crowded into feedlots, being beaten, fed poisoned and unnatural food, and for those of you languishing without water or food on trucks or entering the slaughterhouses. We bear witness to your suffering, we take action to permanently end it, and we continually send out an energy field of love and compassion to comfort you and to transform the hearts and souls of those who support this violent oppression. We send our tears and our prayers on wings of love to you. Divine Love is all around you. Compassion encircles the earth for each of you and for all beings.

Tuesday: Today let us send our prayers to all the “companion animals” suffering homelessness, abuse, and/or lives in breeding mills.
May compassion and love reign over all the earth for all “companion animals” who are suffering at the hands of human beings. Dear dogs, cats, horses, guinea pigs, rabbits, snakes, mice, turtles, birds, ferrets, sugar gliders, frogs, and so many others. We pray for you that you may have peace and joy in this precious life of yours. Some of you want to live free of human interference, and some of you truly want to be part of your human family. We bear witness to your suffering; we do what we can to end your suffering and to encourage others to do the same; and we continually send out an energy field of love and compassion to comfort you and to transform the hearts and souls of those who support the cruelty and oppression of each of you. Divine Love and our love is all around you. Compassion encircles the earth for each of you and for all beings.

Wednesday: Today let us send our prayers to all animals vivisected in laboratories and classrooms.

May compassion and love reign over all the earth for all animals used for experiments. Dear primates, dogs, cats, mice; rats, pigs, lambs, rabbits, frogs, and all of you who are imprisoned in cages, tortured in useless experiments, separated from your loved ones, and suffering constant pain, fear, and loneliness, sometimes for many long years. Dear ones, we bear witness to your suffering, we take action to permanently end it, and we continually send out an energy field of love and compassion to comfort you and to transform the hearts and souls of those who support this violent oppression. We send our tears and our prayers on wings of love to you. Divine Love is all around you. Compassion encircles the earth for each of you and for all beings.

Thursday: Today let us send our prayers and love to all aquatic animals.

May compassion and love reign over all the earth for all the water beings living in the seas, lakes, and rivers. Dear fish, whales, dolphins, crabs, lobsters, starfish, jellyfish, shrimp, coral, and all the other amazing beings who make the waters of earth their home. Your homes and your very lives are being devastated by huge fishing fleets, by trash, oil, sewage, runoff, and other poisons dumped into your waters, by cutting off your fins, and by capturing you and your loved ones for aquariums and the pet trade. Together, we bear witness to your suffering, take action to end it permanently, and send out an energy field of love and compassion to comfort you and to transform the hearts and souls of those who support this violent oppression. Divine Love and our love is all around you. Compassion encircles the earth for each of you and for all beings.

Friday: Prayers for wild animals being trapped, hunted, caged and/or killed for fur, flesh, leather, trophies, the pet trade, etc., and for wild animals being forced into stress and extinction due to loss of habitat.
May compassion and love reign over all the earth for all the beings of the wilderness. Dear bears, foxes, cougars, deer, alligators, wild horses, prairie dogs, primates, mink, bison, beavers, elephants, birds, fish, whales, and all the other magnificent beings born in freedom and suffering now at the hands of human beings, living in fear of human beings, and mourning the loss of loved ones who have been tortured and either imprisoned or killed. Together, we bear witness to your suffering, take action to end it forever, and send out an energy field of love and compassion to comfort you and to transform the hearts and souls of those who support the violent oppression of all of you. We send our tears and prayers on wings of love to you. Divine Love and our love is all around you. Compassion encircles the earth for each of you and for all beings.

Saturday: Prayers for animals enslaved in entertainment and work, such as, zoos, circuses, rodeos, aquariums, theme parks, canned hunts, carriage rides, carrying of heavy burdens, and pulling of plows.
May compassion and love reign over all the earth for all the beings used in the human entertainment industry. Dear animals forced to carry heavy loads, dolphins, whales, horses, bulls, elephants, bears, lambs, pigs, sea otters, fish, elks, deer, rhinos, hippos, alligators, snakes, polar bears, lions, tigers, gorillas, chimpanzees, and all of you who are incarcerated and/or forced to work under heavy loads when you want your freedom so much; who remember your parents being killed so that you could be captured; who are forced often with whips, chains, and electric prods to perform unnatural tricks; who are treated without respecting the the dignity of your true nature. Together, we bear witness to your suffering, take action to bring it to a permanent end, and send out our energy field of love and compassion to comfort you and to transform the hearts and souls of those who support the violent oppression of all of you. Divine Love and our love is all around you. Compassion encircles the earth for each of you and for all beings.

Sunday: Prayers for the nations of insects and other small creatures.
May compassion and love reign over all the earth for all the tiny beings who live in the soil, the trees, the water, and the air, creating harmony and balance with your songs, your pollinating of flowers, your graceful flight, your mysterious transformations, and your miraculous ability to literally create soil in which new plants can take root. Dear dragonflies, bees, wasps, butterflies, mosquitoes, moths, beetles, cicadas, crickets, spiders, ants, and all of you who suffer immeasurably at the hands of people who do not understand the miracle of who you are, who poison you, stomp on you, and destroy your homes. You are so small, and many of us who do care about you find ourselves bringing you harm. We ask for your forgiveness and your help and together we bear witness to your suffering, take action to permanently end it, and send out our energy field of love and compassion to comfort you and to transform the hearts and souls of those who support the violent oppression of all of you. Divine Love and our love is all around you. Compassion encircles the earth for each of you and for all beings.

A Short Blessing for the Animals

May all my sacred brothers and sisters
Walk
Fly
Swim
And move
In Love, Peace, and Freedom.
The prayer above is from Judy Carman's book, Peace to All Beings.
Order now!

A Mealtime Prayer
(Can be spoken or sung to the tune of the hymn "All Things Bright and Beautiful.")
We joyfully give thanks for this--our meal of love and peace.
For no one's child lies on our plates. None suffered for our feast.
We pray for peace on earth for all and grace to do our part.
To God and to all life we are connected heart to heart.

© 2004 Judy Carman

Point of View
by Shel Silverstein

Thanksgiving dinner’s sad and thankless,
Christmas dinner's dark and blue
When you stop and try to see it
From the turkey’s point of view.

Sunday dinner isn’t sunny
Easter feasts are just bad luck,
When you see it from the viewpoint
Of the chicken or the duck.

Oh, how I once loved tuna salad,
Pork and lobster, lamb chops, too,
Till I stopped and looked at dinner
From the dinner’s point of view.

Buddhist Meal Offering Prayer
May we partake of this food ever mindful of its true source.
May we partake of this food ever mindful of its true worth.
May we be ever mindful that it sustains the temple wherein the spirit resides.
And may the uses of the temple take us up the mountain of karma to the summit of enlightenment.

From the Buddhist Tradition - The Five Contemplations (for meals)
1. This food is a gift of the whole universe - the earth, the sky, numerous living beings, and much hard work.
2. May we eat with mindfulness and gratitude so as to be worthy to receive it.
3. May we recognize and transform our unwholesome mental formations, especially our greed, and learn to eat with moderation.
4. May we keep our compassion alive by eating in such a way that we reduce the suffering of living beings, preserve our planet, and reverse the process of war and global destruction.
5. We accept this food so that we may nurure our sisterhood and brotherhood, strengthen our sangha, and nourish our ideal of serving living beings.

The Bodhisattva Vow
Whatever be the highest perfection of the human mind, may I realize it for the benefit of all living beings. Even though I may have to take upon myself all the sufferings of the world, I will not forsake my aim and my fellow creatures in order to win salvation for myself only.

A Buddhist Prayer
Let the animals be free from the fear of being devoured…
Let the bodhisattvas' wishes for the well-being of the world become reality.
May everything that these protectors intend be realized for all sentient beings…
Let all the sufferings of the world come to an end in me…

A Buddhist Meditation

I am Peace
surrounded by Peace,
secure in Peace.
Peace protects me.
Peace supports me.
Peace is in me.
Peace is mine--All is well. Peace to all beings
Peace among all beings.
Peace from all beings.
I am steeped in Peace,
absorbed in Peace.
In the streets, at work, at home,
having peaceful thoughts,
speaking peaceful words,
offering peaceful acts.

I No Longer Steal From Nature

by ~ Al-Ma’arri (973-1057)

You are diseased in understanding and religion.
Come to me, that you may hear something of sound truth.
Do not unjustly eat fish the water has given up,
And do not desire as food the flesh of slaughtered animals,
Or the white milk of mothers who intended its pure draught
for their young, not noble ladies.
And do not grieve the unsuspecting birds by taking eggs;
for injustice is the worst of crimes.
And spare the honey which the bees get industriously
from the flowers of fragrant plants;
For they did not store it that it might belong to others,
Nor did they gather it for bounty and gifts.
I washed my hands of all this; and wish that I
Perceived my way before my hair went gray!

(How refreshing to know that these all-encompassing thoughts were written 1,000 years in Baghdad!)

We Hear Your Cries

by Brenda Shoss

We hear your cries
Inside lightless stockades where metal bars define your earth
Where your frantic eyes gaze over an amputated beak
Unable to dust bath or flutter one wing
An automated hum, the only sound in your artificial prison
We hear your cries
In the narrow crates that envelop you from endless pregnancy to nameless death
From your first and last walk down death's corridor
toward a blood splattered man who guides your quivering body
into the crushing blast of his stun gun
From the impersonal thrust of his knife through still-warm flesh
to the final moment when you are dismantled limb by limb
We hear your cries
As you rock in the corner of your concrete world
Waiting for them to blind, burn and inject poison into your exhausted body
We ache to shield you from the scalpels and skull probes you have yet to endure We hear your cries
When they blast 5,000 volts of electrified pain into your flesh
Every time they batter you with metal pipes, bullhooks, flank straps and spurs
to obliterate your memories of a mother's love and infinite green
We hear your cries
As you search for one familiar face in the desolate days before
a gas chamber claims your anonymous life
When you seek the comfort of one set of arms
Your last tail wagged
Your last purr heard in a gray room with no windows

WE HEAR YOUR CRIES AND WE ARE COMING.

I've Never Seen A Purple Cow

By Martha Devine (Granny Green Genes)

I've never seen a purple cow
I hope someday to meet one
But I can tell you anyhow
I'd rather greet than eat one.

Chickens have been friends of mine
As well as bovines, fish and swine
They love their babes, as I love mine
Why must they die so we may dine?

And if I met a pig with flu
I think I'd know just what to do
I wouldn't eat her, that's for sure
And together, we would find a cure!

“Just a Chicken”

by Chicklett, the baby rooster
(Through Whitney Hillman, his rescuer, of Concordia High School, Concordia, KS)

You think I have no purpose,
I’m just food for your plate.
I hope this facebook shows you,
Food was not my intended fate.
The world is waking up now,
I hope you will wake up too.
Yes, I am only one chicken,
But you need to wear my shoe.
I hope you learn from me now,
That happy meals and finger lickin’
Do not portray the true reality,
And cruelty toward the chicken.

I don’t deserve to die by a child’s hands,
And my life is not your teaching tool.
I deserve to live as a chicken should,
This “project” does not belong in school.
I hope to change this indifference,
Though I know it won’t change for some.
But my death was not a needed event
To “Know Where Your Food Comes From.”

You wanted us to wear for you
An “identification” head-stamp.
And live within the confines
Of your concentration camp.
When you began to plan this “project,”
Did you ever stop and ponder
That children and chickens would bond,
And their hearts would only grow fonder?
You think that my short lifespan
Makes for a fair debate.
You knew I was genetically modified.
Why did you reenact the hate?

So you think death is a skill
That a child needs to know?
You used me in your classroom,
And let the children watch me grow.
The weekend before the slaughter,
We would like to have been fed.
But you were not the hungry one,
We were just food, you said.
I think you could have taught better,
Taught lessons more humane.
But instead you only contributed
To sadness, death and pain.

I’m asking that you learn from me now,
And read the messages I’ve read from some.
I think it’s time to turn tables on you,
Do you “know where YOUR food comes from?”
You say it was all for “attention.”
I hope that makes you feel better.
But we are seeking change,
And we’ll do that … letter by letter.
You’d like this all to come to a stop,
You’d like the quiet and silence.
But don’t you see? If I do that,
I’m succumbing to the violence.

Whitney believed she had no choice.
She had to grab me and run.
So you sacrificed every chicken,
Every single chicken—but one.
So you think I’m just one chicken,
One less meal on your plate.
But my purpose now is greater,
And that’s a much better fate.
My final message is a gift to the world,
Please open up your eyes.
See finger lickin’ for what it really is,
One giant pack of lies.

Chicklett’s poem “Just a Chicken” is expressed through the mind and spirit of his friend and savior, Whitney Hillman, in memory of the 39 chickens, Chicklett’s flock mates, who suffered and died needlessly at Concordia High School in Concordia, Kansas on October 11, 2010. To meet Chicklett on Facebook, go to www.facebook.com/chicklett.chickenhillman

A Prayer to Help us Hold the Vision (p. 169)
Heavenly Creator,
You whose magnetic love has kept us ever seeking you,
Help us to keep our vision close and real in our hearts and minds and souls.
Help us project it out on rays of light beaming from our hearts. Help us to hold
this grand vision of all of us finally transcending into our true nature
as beings of universal, transcendent love.
We see this magnificent earth populated by kind humans who are fearless
because You are in each one of us.
And in this fearlessness we find no need or violence of any kind toward anyone.
We live in harmony and mutual respect with all animals and all creation.
Only Divine kindness and compassion, love and light expresses through us as we stand all rapt in awe at the holy wonder of the loving universe.
Om Shanti, Shanti

A Prayer to Be Compassion (p. 171)
I understand that
To find compassion for animals, I must be compassion.
To obtain peace for the animals, I must be peace.
To gain love for the animals, I must be love. Help me, Dear Lord of Compassion, to be in heart, soul, body, word, and deed that which I want to manifest on earth for the animals
and for us all.
Thank you, God

Transformative Prayer for Institutions of Cruelty: Laboratories, Slaughterhouses, Factory Farms, and others (p. 176)
Dear Lord of Heaven and Earth and All-That-Is,
You who are the energy of whole and perfect love and light,
Move through me now as I focus my love and light and as I focus the love and light that flows through me from You in an endless stream.
Make me a beacon of your Love-light and shine through me now.
I now focus this radiance and this Divine Transforming Love on all animal laboratories, all factory farms and slaughterhouses, all fur farms, circuses, zoos, marine parks, rodeos, whaling ships, pesticide
and other chemical manufacturers, fishing, hunting and trapping organizations, and all other institutions
which cause the suffering of innocent beings.
I can see the cosmic rays of Your Everlasting Love pouring down upon these places.
Within this light, there can be
no fear
no hatred
no ignorance
no greed.
Within this light, there can be only YOUR LOVE. And as these institutions are infused and blessed
by the light of your Love I see those who work there being transformed, as they open their eyes to see the glorious beauty and sacredness in the animals there.
I see their hearts opening and finding the inner peace that comes through loving kindness to all creation.
And as these institutions are bathed and blessed by the light of your undying Love for all creation,
I see the animals feeling Your peace and Your comfort as You embrace each one of them
and bless their spirits. Help us, Father-Mother God,to grow bolder and more fearless every day and guide us closely and clearly as we work and pray to end the suffering of the innocents and bring Your Heaven to earth.
And so it is.
Thank you, God

Calling the Animals to Share Our Vision For a Compassionate World (p. 179)
To all dolphins, elephants, seals, whales, spiders, to all my brothers and sisters of the animal nations,
We are always connected by our kinship and our mutual divinity.
I am now consciously connecting with you from my mind to yours, from my heart to yours.
Together, let us hold the vision of a world filled with love, where humans no longer attack you,
kill you, imprison you, torture you, or enslave you.
A world in which we all communicate from one species to another, just as the races of humans are doing now.
A world in which all species understand the sacredness of all life and the oneness and interconnectedness we share.
A vision of us all waking up to who we are as we evolve the entire creation toward
our destiny as spirits manifesting beauty, truth, universal love, and freedom in physical form. As I reach out to all of you, my heart aches for the suffering that you continue to endure at the hands of human beings all over the earth and sea.
May you find hope and comfort in knowing that there are millions of us now who are working to end
your suffering and to begin the healing.
There are millions of us now working to educate those who do not yet understand who you are.
There are millions of us now keeping you in our hearts and in our prayers.
We know that your spirits join with our spirits as we hold this vision of a
WORLD ENCIRCLED WITH
LOVE FOR ALL BEINGS
And so it is. Mitakuye Oyas’in
Thank you, God

From Atonement to At-one-ment (p. 183)
Oh, Heavenly Creator, You who forgives all, and loves all, help us to make atonement to the animals of earth for atrocities performed by human beings against them for centuries.
Link our spirits now with their spirits so that they may hear our cries of sorrow and shame for what we have done to them. Dear brothers and sisters, we have tortured you, beaten you, killed, sacrificed, skinned, sheared, dismembered, and eaten you.
We have scorned you, laughed at your pain, taken your infants from you, chained you, caged you, forced you to carry our burdens, starved you, hooked you, stolen your feathers, your pleasures, and your sanity. We have treated you like machines without feelings, ignoring your screams, but we were the machines without feelings, not you. You run from our knives, and we chase you as if we have the right to take your life so dear to you. We have taken advantage of your loyalty, even forced you to fight or run to the death
for us, for a few dollars in our pockets. Century after century, you have given to us your friendship, fidelity, devotion, hard work, and you who live in the wild places, have given us glimpses of heaven in your beauty
and looked at us with God’s eyes.
All the while, you have been crying out to us to wake up to our kinship with you. But now we are awake and more are waking with us. Now we hear you.
We go forward this day, bearing witness to our atrocities, bearing witness to your infinite gifts to us, and honoring your sacred nature.
And here is our gift to you, and here is our atonement,
that we will walk side by side with you, defending you, teaching people the truth about you, and working to bring an end to violence toward animals everywhere. We call upon the loving universe and the grace of God to help us as we humans join with all of you to affirm the advent of a new day in which our broken hearts are healed by your forgiveness, and your broken hearts are healed by our awakening to Truth; and to affirm the dawning of a new
Heaven on Earth in which atonement becomes at-onement.

Presbyterian Prayer: The Vision of a Peaceable Kingdom (p. 188)

May the vision of a Peaceable Kingdom
grow in the hearts of all people.
May all creation cry out for justice and shalom,
and may we have ears to hear and hands
to dedicate toward the work of peacemaking.

First Presbyterian Church, 1991

St. Basil’s Prayer for the Increase of Human Compassion
A.D. 375* (p. 190)

The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof.
Oh, God, enlarge within us the sense of fellowship
with all living things, our brothers the animals
to whom Thou gavest the earth as their home
in common with us.

We remember with shame that in the past
we have exercised the high dominion of man
with ruthless cruelty so that the voice of the earth,
which should have gone up to Thee in song,
has been a groan of travail.

May we realize that they live not for us alone,
but for themselves and for Thee,
and that they love the sweetness of life. (6)

*St. Basil was a theologian and bishop in the early Christian church. He established the first hospital ever to take care of lepers.

Buddhist Prayer for Animals to be Free From Suffering (p. 190)

May all beings be free from enmity;
May all beings be free from injury;
May all beings be free from suffering;
May all beings be happy. (7)

Schweitzer’s Nighttime Prayer of Protection and Blessing for the Animals (p. 191)

Dear God
Protect and bless all beings that breathe,
keep all evil from them,
and let them sleep in peace.

Jain Prayer for Peace for All Beings (p. 192)

Peace and Universal Love is the essence
of the Gospel preached by all the Enlightened Ones.
The Lord has preached that equanimity is the Dharma.
Forgive do I creatures all,
and let all creatures forgive me.
Unto all have I amity, and unto none enmity.
Know that violence is the root cause of
all the miseries in the world.
Violence, in fact, is the knot of bondage.
“Do not injure any living being.”
This is the eternal, perennial,
and unalterable way of spiritual life.
A weapon, howsoever powerful it may be,
can always be superseded by a superior one;
but no weapon can, however,
be superior to nonviolence and love.

The 23rd Psalm re-crafted by Rene Rowland

god is my sheep, she does not want.

god is my pasture and my still waters.

she refreshes my soul with breath and life. she teaches me to take simple paths, for earth's sake.

though one day i shall rest in the ground, she has gone before me many thousand times, and she is with me, because she knows. and she trusts; thus am i comforted.

she sets her table with every living thing that springs up from the earth. there are so many, i cannot contain them all.

goodness is mine when i honor my earth, and mercy when i show it to the least of creatures. then will i dwell in god forever.

The Compassion Commitment (p. 252-3)

WE, the human residents of this beautiful, blue-green Planet Earth, do hereby declare that all of creation is sacred and interconnected. We know that all the stones, the mountains, the trees, the birds, the fish, the bears, the wind, the sun, all-that-is and we, ourselves, are worthy of awe and wonder. Whatever happens to one of us, happens to us all. We understand that the Divine Creator is Love and exists in everything, everywhere, making every being an embodiment of Divine Love.

WE recognize that we can choose to evolve in the direction of full spiritual consciousness. We are spiritual beings blessed with eternal oneness, power, love, creativity, perfection, and divinity. We are rising from the status of competitive survivors to becoming gentle, compassionate caretakers of this miracle known as Planet Earth. We are expanding our circle of compassion to include all of God’s creation, the entire family of earth.

WE hold the vision that, with God’s unfailing Love and Assistance, we can create a world free of hunger and poverty and prejudice; a world free of war and violence against the earth, against animals, and against human beings; a world free of hatred and fear.

WE will use our power in our roles as parents, teachers, investors, consumers, voters, and active participants in life to promote harmlessness and compassion for all beings, peace and justice, environmental sustainability, and to do our part to help life evolve to its full flowering in spiritual consciousness. In Mother Teresa’s words, “Let us conquer the world with our love.”

WE commit ourselves to hold this vision close to our hearts and to pray this prayer:

Oh, Divine One, we give thanks continually to You
for loving us so completely and, thereby,
showing us how to encircle the earth
with Love and Compassion as you encircle us.
May Love, Peace, and Compassion
for all Beings be expressed
everywhere on earth. Amen

Om, Shanti, Shanti, Shanti
