Greetings of love and gratitude from Judy Carman

Palitana, India, outlaws sale of meat and eggs: The online "Peaceable Table" (www.vegetarianfriends.net), which I highly recommend to all, announced in the October issue that the town of Palitana in India has outlawed the sale of meat and eggs in the town following a hunger strike by 200 Jain monks.  Their fast underscored their demand that the holy city of Palitana be declared a meat-free zone.  It is also now unlawful to slaughter any animal in the city limits. According to theanimalspost.com, there is a significant pushback from meat eaters, fishermen and others who claim there are political motives behind this law.  But the fact that this has happened at all, that the world now has a vegetarian city, is a bright star of hope for all life.  

The Transformation of Human Hearts: One of the Jain monks stated “Everyone in this world — whether animal or human being or a very small creature — has all been given the right to live by God. So who are we to take away that right from them? This has been written in the holy books of every religion, particularly in Jainism.” With over 6 million Jains in the world and a constantly growing number of vegans, we are moving ever closer to the great transformation of human hearts that will forever end the exploitation and killing of our precious neighbors—the animals of earth.

This Week’s Vision—Vegan Cities Everywhere: This week let us imagine one city after another, all across the globe, following the example of Palitana, and becoming not just vegetarian, but vegan cities.  Imagine living in those cities or traveling through them and feeling the peace there.  No more bar-b-que signs with smiling pigs on them; no more dead bodies or stolen eggs and milk in the grocery stores; no more fast food drive-throughs selling sandwiches filled with death.  Let us deeply feel the joy as if it is really happening in our towns.  Together let us breathe life into this vision and feel the mystery and beauty of it.  Let us give thanks for the 200 Jain monks who are lighting the way and for the grace we have been given to be able to imagine this new world of Love that is on its way.
